Modern Backyard Retreat

This new-build home in Royal Oak began with a large, empty backyard and a raised patio installed by the builder. After reviewing inspiration photos with the client, Senior Landscape Designer Lynn designed a modern outdoor living space with an up-north feel that invites people in and encourages gathering.

A key goal was creating a unique layout that would draw people into the space while maintaining a strong sense of cohesion throughout the property. Techo-Bloc Blu Grande, Blu60, and Squadra pavers were used to achieve a clean, modern look with subtle texture and variation. These same materials were carried through to the front walk, creating a seamless connection between the front and backyard.

One of the main challenges was removing the existing raised patio, which was filled with debris, along with buried concrete left behind by the builder. Despite these obstacles, the space was thoughtfully reworked to allow for proper planting and a cohesive, finished landscape that complements the home.
