Desert-Inspired Backyard

The clients envisioned an outdoor space inspired by California and desert landscapes, with warm tones, texture, and a relaxed, inviting atmosphere. Their wish list included a deck, a cedar soaking tub, space for a fire pit, vegetable planters, a shed, and an open lawn area where their toddler could play and practice his golf skills. Creating a space that felt both playful and refined was key.

Landscape Architect Alexandra Hossfeld designed the space to balance these diverse elements while maintaining a cohesive, intentional layout. To bring the vision to life, our team carefully coordinated multiple subcontractors throughout the project, ensuring each feature worked together seamlessly. A shared Pinterest pinboard helped align inspiration and expectations, especially when translating desert-inspired design to a Michigan climate.

Black and cedar elements were used throughout the space to create warmth and continuity, from the soaking tub-inspired deck and fencing to custom planters. Drought-tolerant plant selections, including Alaskan cedar, ornamental grasses, lamb’s ear, and salvia, provide movement and texture while remaining practical for the region. The patio features Techo-Bloc Black Terrazzo brick paired with slate-scape, tying the hardscape materials back to the home and overall design aesthetic.

Thoughtfully placed landscape lighting enhances the atmosphere and extends the use of the space into the evening, transforming the backyard into a magical retreat designed for family life, relaxation, and connection.
