A Cottage in the City

About The Project

This project was full of surprises! The client wanted to create a backyard space that reminded them of their Northern Michigan cottage. They were looking for that Up North feel without getting in the car every weekend. They were also looking for a functional space for their family of four with two dogs. Since they love entertaining, they wanted a patio accommodating a grill and an 8-10-person dining space.

We started the project in early winter, which caused some challenges for the crew. We had to deal with the chaos of Michigan winter, including snow storms and cold temperatures. The team also faced a challenge when excavating for the patio base. Once we started digging, we realized there was an old sewer connection and electrical line we were not expecting. Luckily, Landscape Architect Alexandra Hossfeld and the Crew were able to work together to figure out a solution and quickly resolve the problem. We removed the old sewer connection and worked with an electrician to move the electrical line safely.

To incorporate the Up North feel, Alexandra designed the patio with rustic brick choices and created a space that isn’t overly formal or modern. At the end of the project, the clients were happy with their new “cottage” space in Berkley, and Alexandra would describe the final design as “comfortable, cozy and cottagey.”
