If you have taken a look at our portfolio you can see that we have been privileged to create some amazing outdoor living spaces. Some have been outfitted with all the creature comforts of an indoor family room/kitchen space. These amenities include food and drink at hand, media centers, fireplaces and ceiling fans. But maybe that’s not your style.
Perhaps you are just looking for a quiet spot to relax or to entertain a handful of close friends; more of a Zen experience than a party. You need a private garden nook. You need the perfect place to escape for a while, right in your own backyard. A garden nook will serve as a focal point and an inviting destination perfect for having conversation or enjoying a quiet moment to yourself.
Here’s how to choose a spot for your own garden nook and some design moves to make it feel like your very own secret garden destination.
Choose the right spot for a nook
Select a cozy and inviting spot at the end of a path or an area backed by a garden wall and surrounded by leafy greenery. Seek a site that feels secluded. All you need now is a small cafe table and a pair of chairs to tuck into the corner. Alcoves created by hedges, walls and fences, or an area under a large shade tree, are good bets for placing a small seating area.
In small gardens and narrow rectangular lots, position chairs so they are nestled in a corner or backed by a wall, hedge or large potted plants and oriented to look outward. This arrangement will provide a nook-like feeling of privacy and security.
Make an entrance!
Set the tone with cleverly placed gate or archway to your garden nook. The entrance sets the space apart from the rest of the garden.
Plan for a walkway
Mark the route to the seating nook with a meandering walkway that lets you literally and figuratively leave the rest of the yard and the rest of the day behind you. Plant lush foliage plants and fragrant blooms close by. Add subtle LED lighting to add to the mood for evening outings.
Screen for privacy
When your goal is to get away from it all you need to make sure you aren’t looking straight into a neighbor’s house from your seating nook. Increase privacy by using fencing, walls or strategic plantings to cover at least two sides of a nook.
Surround with greenery
Your landscape design will surround your nook with foliage plants to buffer outside interference and invite the birds and butterflies to keep you company. A mixture of perennials, shrubs, trees, and containers with season-long blooming annuals will be the walls of your room.
Invest in a garden room or structure
If you want to go one step further in both budget and effort, invest in a garden room that can function as a nook for reading, indulging your hobbies or hosting friends. The garden pavilion pictured above is inspired by a visit the homeowner enjoyed at a Santa Barbara spa. It’s perfect for entertaining a small group.
