Our homes can be a bit like a relationship, electrifying when new. However, as the years go by, we slowly become blind to the subtle changes that occur in our homes as they age. Stairs begin to creak, not dissimilar to one’s knees. If you find yourself in agreement with any of the items below, it might be time to revitalize your space and consider a landscape update.
You’ve Recently Hit a Life Milestone
As major life milestones are reached, generally speaking, a renovation project will shortly follow. Whether it is switching out the home office to make way for a new baby or converting an underused room into a hobby space, our houses have to evolve to work for us. These changes are a necessity inside the home but are sometimes overlooked outside the home. For instance, an expanse of green in your backyard can quickly transition from being an ideal grassy backdrop for children to play, to weekends of hard labor. A pool that was the highlight of the summer can become too much of a bother to upkeep. Every so often it is a good idea to ask yourself if your landscape still works for you. It might be time for a landscape update.
Your Plants Have Outgrown their Welcome
I often get requests from clients to enhance their existing planting beds. A common issue when I get to a job site is finding plants that have outgrown their current space. These overgrown shrubs can cast a dark shadow on your landscape, literally. By removing dense plantings and replacing with new, appropriately scaled plants, one can dramatically alter the effect of the landscape, exposing new lines in your home’s architecture.
Trends Change
While good design should be ageless, gardens are not immune to changing trends. Plants, colors and paving material selections rise in popularity only to reach a saturation point and feel stale. Working with a designer can help you stay ahead of the trend, or find designs that are timeless. If your outdoor living space is starting to feel a bit retro, but not in a good way, it might be time to give it a facelift.
