Your landscaping isn’t created for one season or even one year. A well-designed, stylish landscape isn’t like a trendy new outfit. It is not meant to be replaced when the next trend comes along. It is meant to grow and evolve over time. Each year we endeavor to research new trends in the industry as new things become available in the marketplace and lifestyles change.
Here are the relevant landscape trends I see leading us into 2021:
1. Mindfulness and a desire to find solitude in quiet spaces is influencing design
Clients are looking for a secluded space for yoga and meditation. It could be a niche just large enough for a yoga mat, a hammock or a corner large enough for a chair and you. Fragrant plants, shade, a small trickling fountain, and privacy complete the scene.
2. Vegetable and herb gardening continues to grow in popularity
Americans are thinking more about where food comes from; the quality and freshness of what we eat. Some opt for a garden of vegetables while others incorporate more decorative herbs and vegetable plants within the landscape plantings. These gardens benefit the gardener, and it is increasingly common to share the surplus with the community.
3. Technology moves outside
Mobile devices act as remote controls for our home video, gaming, HVAC, door bells, and lighting and now their reach extends to the outdoor room: landscape lighting, firepits, audio/visual equipment, and sprinkler systems.
4. Second Homes
For clients seeking respite in their second home that usually means less lawn care and a simple satisfying design that includes plants that are happy to be left alone.
5. Is it 2005? Is a stay-cation still a thing?
More than ever, we find retreat in our own backyards. We ask, “why just one vacation this year?” when a well-designed outdoor room can be a new vacation every night. Complete the experience with a patio, a video and sound system, quality outdoor furniture for eating al fresco, and of course, a BBQ. Add a fire feature and lighting to extend the night and the seasons. We know many clients who hosted New Year’s Parties on their patio this year.
We have seen the trends of past years continue and strengthen. We seek balance in our lives of work-home-family-play-enlightenment. We spend time in our outdoor spaces because they give us balance. And we can get there just by walking through the door.
