Modern Backyard Retreat: From Empty Yard to Everyday Escape

Starting With A Vision

When this Royal Oak new-build home was complete, the backyard told a familiar story, a large, open space with plenty of potential but no clear direction.

The builder had installed a raised patio, but beyond that, the space felt unfinished. It wasn’t yet a place to gather, unwind, or truly enjoy.

That’s where our team came in.

Lynn Cavanaugh Senior Landscape Designer & Project Manager

Like many of our projects, this one began with inspiration.

The homeowners came to us with ideas and reference photos that leaned toward a modern aesthetic, but with something more, a relaxed, “up-north” feel that would make the space feel like an escape from everyday life.

Working closely with them, our design team translated those ideas into a cohesive plan, one that balanced clean lines with warmth and comfort. The goal was simple: create a backyard that draws people outside and makes them want to stay.

Modern design doesn’t have to mean stark or sterile. When done right, it can feel warm, livable, and deeply personal.

Designing For Real Life

A great outdoor space isn’t just about how it looks; it’s about how it functions day to day.

Instead of treating the yard as one large, undefined area, we approached it as a series of connected experiences. Each space was designed with intention, while still feeling seamless and unified.

The raised patio became the foundation, a natural gathering space for dining and conversation. From there, the layout expanded to include areas that encourage both relaxation and connection.

This kind of thoughtful zoning is what turns a backyard into an extension of the home, rather than just an outdoor afterthought.

Creating that "Up-North" Feeling

One of the defining elements of this project is its atmosphere. While the design is modern, it avoids feeling cold or overly minimal. Instead, it leans into natural textures, comfortable materials, and a layout that feels inviting rather than rigid. This balance is what gives the space its “up-north” character, a place that feels like a getaway without ever leaving home.

It’s a reminder that modern design doesn’t have to mean stark or sterile. When done right, it can feel warm, livable, and deeply personal.

The Finished Result

What started as an empty yard is now a fully realized outdoor living space, one that feels intentional, inviting, and complete.

It’s a backyard that reflects the homeowners’ style, supports their lifestyle, and adds lasting value to their home.

Thinking About Your Own Backyard?

If your outdoor space feels underused or unfinished, you’re not alone.

With the right design, even the most basic backyard can become a place you look forward to spending time in, whether that means hosting, relaxing, or simply stepping outside at the end of the day

And it all starts with a plan.
